Holiday Greetings from Dean Woodruff

Dear Members of our TGS Community,

As we head into the winter break, I would like to wish you a festive and restful holiday season. No matter how and where you celebrate this season of giving, I hope it is filled with laughter, relaxation, and a renewed sense of well-being for the coming year.

It has been a joy to spend time with many of you at recent events. From cheering on the Wildcats at a football game to taking in the festive sounds of the Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, our “Experience Northwestern” event series has been a delightful way to take a break and gather as a community for camaraderie and good cheer. I hope even more TGS students will consider joining us at an upcoming event!

Another highlight this holiday season has been gathering with the family members of some of our graduate students and postdocs who are parents. This event helps create a community of support for those juggling course and lab work with the demands of family life. Seeing families mix and mingle while making crafts and playing games was a treat.

I would also like to thank those who took part in our “TGS Gives Back” holiday food drive. The canned goods we collected will benefit the Rogers Park drop-off locations of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. These donations are just a small way to demonstrate our care and commitment to a neighborhood that so many of us call home.

We want Northwestern to feel like home, and The Graduate School will continue to work with our campus partners in 2019 and beyond to ensure there is a strong emphasis on wellness and well-being for those in our graduate community.

A mantra I have been reciting this past year is simply “to be kind.” In today’s world, it is more important than ever to be kind to ourselves and to one another. Carry that intention with you throughout the holidays and into the new year.

Wishing you joy and peace.
