In addition to a number of discipline-based organizations and special interest groups, there are eight major graduate student associations serving students on the Chicago and Evanston campuses:
- Graduate Student Association (GSA)
GSA’s goal is to enhance the quality of graduate student life at Northwestern University. GSA connects graduate students across TGS-affiliated departments and programs by collaborating with TGS admin, the Graduate Leadership and Advocacy Group (GLAC), and other grad organization. In addition, they host social events that build a diverse graduate student community.
- Chicago Graduate Student Association (CGSA)
CGSA aims to serve in the best interest of all graduate students on the Chicago campus. CGSA works to achieve this goal by advocating for and promoting students’ rights, academic and professional development, social interaction and community outreach.
- Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA)
BGSA fosters a sense of community among the Black graduate student body by representing and acting upon its academic, cultural, intellectual, social, and political concerns and interests.
- Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA)
CSSA is dedicated to promoting social, intellectual and cultural activities for Chinese students and scholars. CSSA strives to provide benefits for Chinese students and scholars at Northwestern by organizing festival activities, providing information for jobs, etc.
- Indian Graduate Students and Scholars Association (IGSAA)
IGSAA aims to increase the awareness of Indians on campus and in the community, to preserve the rich cultural heritage of India, to ensure a homey atmosphere for Indian students living away from home, and to unite Indians and people of other races by celebrating and learning from diversity.
- Iranian Student Association (IRSA)
IRSA is a student group dedicated to promoting social, intellectual, and cultural activities for Iranian students and scholars at Northwestern as well as interested members in the University community. Besides cultural and social activities, the IRSA strives to provide opportunities and benefits for its members such as information and support for incoming students, and connecting current Northwestern students with Iranian alumni
- Queer Pride Graduate Student Association (QPGSA)
QPGSA is committed to developing a sense of community among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and allied members of Northwestern’s graduate student community. Membership is available to all current Northwestern graduate students and alumni members who personally identify with and support the goals and the mission of QPGSA.
- McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC)
MGLC was founded to promote a sense of community among the 700+ graduate students within the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern. With strong support from the Dean of NU Engineering, MGLC is a council of graduate student leaders representing all departments within NU Engineering.
