Survey on Values and Sense of Belonging for Graduate Students of Color

Values and Sense of Belonging for Graduate Students of Color Research Opportunity

Are you a graduate student of color earning a doctoral degree? Would you like to be entered into a raffle to win a $50 Visa gift card?

Researchers at Suffolk University are looking for graduate students currently enrolled in years 1-3 of a doctoral program who identify as an underrepresented minority population (URM; i.e. African-American, Latinx, Native American/Alaska Native, Pacific Islander) to participate in a study examining the relationship between values, racial stressors, and sense of belonging within their graduate community.

Why is This Research Important?

  • Despite increases in the enrollment rates of URMs in doctoral programs, differences across ethnic groups persist with regard to attrition, time to completion, psychosocial functioning, and sense of belonging
  • Systemic changes are needed to provide support and resources to students
  • We also need to better understand how to help individual students cope with racial and other stressors that threaten their well-being and academic success.

The Current Study

  • This study aims to identify potential buffers to the stressors URM face in their doctoral study.
  • Using an anonymous online survey, we are exploring how values, particularly congruence between what is personally meaningful to students and their communities and the student’s professional activities and career trajectory may buffer the effects of stressors on student functioning.
  • Students who complete the survey have the option to be entered into a drawing for a $50 Visa gift card.
  • Eligible students are those enrolled in years 1-3 of a doctoral program who identify as belonging to a racial/ethnic group that has been historically underrepresented in doctoral programs in the United States (i.e. URM; African American, Latinx, Native American).

How to Participate:

  1. Visit the online survey
