Academic Job Market Prep Workshop Series

The Graduate School, in conjunction with the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, the Office of Fellowships, the Graduate Writing Place, and Northwestern Career Advancement (NCA) organizes a workshop series that is dedicated to helping graduate students and postdoctoral trainees enter the academic job market.

The Academic Job Market Preparation Workshop Series aims to demystify the application materials required for the academic job market. Each participant will develop their materials with the guidance of facilitated morning workshops and collaborative working groups in the afternoon. 

These workshops are facilitated by:

Postdocs and students from all disciplines are welcome. You must register separately for each workshop you wish to attend.

Morning Workshops

Morning workshops are scheduled between 9:30-11:00 AM, with the option to break out into smaller groups in the afternoon. Each workshop details how to compose key application materials, such as:

  • Cover letters
  • CVs
  • Diversity statements
  • Research statements
  • Teaching statements

Afternoon Working Groups

In the afternoons, participants have the option to meet in smaller groups to workshop drafts. These workgroups are structured to prioritize drafting academic job market materials in a supportive and collaborative setting.

Seats in the afternoon writing groups are limited. If you want to apply for an afternoon writing group, you must register for all five sessions and submit an application.
