Call for Applicants: HHMI Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study

The Office of Fellowships is seeking advisor-student pairs who are eligible to apply for the HHMI Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study.  This fellowship will be awarded to both an eligible graduate student engaged in PhD dissertation research and their thesis adviser. The Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study will support students typically in years 3-5 of their PhD studies with an annual stipend of $36,000, an educational allowance of $4,000 to support the Fellow’s professional career development, an annual institutional allowance of $10,000, and at least $3000 annually to support activities aimed at addressing the challenges of diversity and inclusion at the graduate level.    

HHMI will evaluate applications on the basis of (1) the demonstrated ability of the institution and the thesis adviser to develop outstanding scientists, especially those from groups historically underrepresented in science, and create a healthy and more inclusive academic scientific ecosystem  (2) the candidate’s promise as a scientific investigator and potential for leadership in the scientific community, including as college or university faculty. Student-adviser pairs must be nominated to the HHMI Gilliam by an internal nomination process administered by the Office of Fellowships on behalf of Northwestern University.

 Adviser-student pair eligibility:       

  • US Citizens, US Permanent Residents, or undocumented individuals who were granted temporary permission to stay in the US
  • Students in their second or third year of a PhD program (NOT dual degree program) and/or have at least two full years of study remaining
  • Students must be pursuing research in Biomedical, Life Sciences, or biological questions in related disciplines (Including Plant Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Biophysics, Chemical Biology, Biomedical Engineering,  Computational Biology, Math, Physics, Chemistry)
  • Student must have a thesis advisor, and have or will advanced to candidacy by September 1, 2022
  • Students must be from populations historically underrepresented in US sciences   (see the HHMI Gilliam Program Announcement for detailed information)
  • Alumni of the HHMI EXROP program are strongly encouraged to apply  

The NU internal deadline is Friday, September 3, 2021 midnight CST. 

HHMI Gilliam has made changes to their application process, thus leading to the tight internal deadline.  The materials needed for the internal deadline have been adjusted to accommodate this tight deadline.
