Regenerative Engineering (Certificate)

The Regenerative Engineering Certificate exposes participants to techniques and methodologies from across the broad range of disciplines that make up the field of regenerative engineering. This program will enable students to acquire fundamental knowledge in developmental and stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and engineering, and translational medicine; gain the ability to design experimental models to understand human disorders and develop engineering systems for controlling cell and tissue regeneration; attain expertise of translating basic discoveries to clinical applications; and ultimately help develop regenerative engineering-based treatment strategies. 

Please note that this certificate is associated with the Regenerative Engineering Training Program offered through the Center for Advanced Regenerative Engineering, and is at present primarily intended for participants in that program.  Please visit the RE-Training Program website to learn more and apply.

How to Apply

Enrolled PhD and Master's students in The Graduate School may pursue this certificate with the permission of their program. In order to petition to have a Graduate Certificate awarded and appear on the transcript, students must submit the  Application for a Graduate Certificate  once all Graduate Certificate requirements have been completed, but no later than the time that the student files for graduation (in the final quarter of study).

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in The Graduate School Policy Guide.

To earn a certificate in Regenerative Engineering, students must meet the Ph.D. program requirements of their own department and complete the following certificate requirements.

Required Courses

Students must complete 5 courses, at least one course from each of the following subject groups:

  • BIOL_SCI 391: Development and Evolution of Body Plans
  • One of either:
    • BMD_ENG 346: Tissue Engineering, or
    • BMD_ENG 347: Foundations of Regenerative Engineering, or
    • BMD_ENG 348: Applications of Regenerative Engineering
  • One of either:
    • MBiotech 410/BME 410: Technology Commercialization Fundamentals* or
    • BME 495-0-4: Pharmaceutical Engineering: From Discovery to Therapeutics.
  • BMD_ENG 407: Experimental Design and Measurement
  • BMD_ENG 495: Experimental Regenerative Engineering Laboratory

*Please note that enrollment in Technology Commercialization Fundamentals is limited to participants in the Regenerative Engineering Training Program, and must be arranged with a program administrator.
