OSL Spotlight: NU Curling

Curling, a winter Olympic sport, involves sliding granite stones across a sheet of ice toward a target while teammates sweep to guide the stone's speed and trajectory (curl). NU Curling is a graduate student organization focused on introducing students to the sport of curling and providing regular opportunities to play. NU Curling welcome beginners and experienced curlers alike, offering a supportive environment to learn, practice, and connect with others.

Read below to learn more about NU Curling.

  • Who all is eligible to join your organization?

Any Northwestern graduate student is eligible to join. No prior experience is required, we provide all necessary equipment and teach you everything you need to know to play.

  • What can new members expect from NU Curling?

New members can expect a welcoming environment where we start each practice by teaching curling fundamentals, perfect for newcomers or anyone who wants a refresher. After that, we split into teams and play a few ends (rounds). While our regular practices are recreational, we also offer competitive opportunities for those interested in playing against curlers from other clubs and schools.

  • What is NU Curling's biggest annual event?

Our biggest annual event is the Northwestern Bonspiel, a curling tournament that brings together current NU Curling members and alumni. It was a long-running tradition for nearly a decade when the club was first founded, and we are working to bring it back this year. While final details are still being organized, the event will once again offer a fun and competitive way for current members and alumni to connect on the ice.

  • What would you say is one of NU Curling's biggest successes or achievements?

One of our biggest achievements is growing a large, welcoming community of curlers who develop a lasting love for the sport. Many NU Curling alumni remain active in curling long after graduation and can be found participating in bonspiels and curling clubs across the United States, reflecting the enduring impact of our club.

  • What impact do you think NU Curling has on the TGS community?

Our organization contributes positively to the TGS community by offering graduate students a meaningful break from the demands of studying, research, and teaching. As a recreation-focused club, we provide a low-pressure environment where members can unwind and enjoy time on the ice.

Beyond recreation, the club fosters a close-knit community in which members from a wide range of departments often form lasting friendships, collaborations, and even competitive teams. In addition, we have a very engaged group of alumni who remain part of the curling community, occasionally competing alongside current members, and regularly return to help teach at practices, strengthening our community across cohorts.
