The Fulbright-Hays DDRA program provides grants to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for six to twelve months. Projects should aim to deepen research knowledge and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula.

The award funding covers:

  • Travel expenses, including excess baggage to and from the residence of the fellow to the host country of research;
  • Maintenance and dependents allowances based on the cost of living in the country(ies) of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s);
  • Project allowance for research-related expenses such as books, copying, tuition and affiliation fees, local travel, and other incidental expenses; and
  • Health and accident insurance premiums.

Eligible applicants will be:

  • a citizen or national of the U.S. or permanent resident of the U.S.;
  • a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the U.S. who, when the fellowship begins, is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution;
  • planning a teaching career in the U.S. upon graduation; and
  • possessing adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project.
The campus deadline to apply is Friday, March 14 at 12:00 PM CT. Fellowship is not eligible for renewal. Please email Stephen Hill with any questions.
