AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy Early-Career Research Scholar Program

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Center for Science Diplomacy is accepting applicants for its early-career research scholar program to conduct short-term (up to 6 months) independent research in policy aspects at the intersection of science and technology (S&T) and diplomacy. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; scholars are selected depending on their fit for the program, research proposal, and timing.

The scholar will:

  • Research a specific policy aspect at the intersection of S&T and diplomacy, developed in conjunction with the Center leadership
  • Summarize research findings, analyze the implications of the findings, and provide policy formulation or strategic implementation options
  • Publish and convene on the research topic


  • Extensive advanced university or college level training leading to Ph.D. or doctoral-equivalent degree in a field of science, engineering, or political science/international relations received within the past five years (in exceptional circumstances, a student currently pursuing a doctoral degree with a strong background in both science and technology and international relations could be considered for the program)
  • Excellent research skills
  • Experience with policy issues, particularly in areas related to international relations, if the advanced degree is in science or engineering; experience with S&T issues, if the advanced degree is in political science/international relations
  • • Strong written and verbal communication, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills

To be considered, applicants must provide the following required information:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter explaining their interest in science diplomacy, describing their proposed research topic(s) of interest, and indicating when they would like to conduct the research
  • One or more writing samples on a policy issue that may include links to additional samples of work available on-line
