Hartwell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship - (Brief) Internal Proposal due May 19th!

Please Note: This is a limited submission funding opportunity!

The Primary Mission of The Hartwell Foundation is to grant awards to individuals for innovative and cutting-edge biomedical applied research that will potentially benefit children. The individuals and children should be citizens of the United States. The Fellowship will support scientists and biomedical engineers who are still in the early stages of career development and it must be used to pursue further specialized research training, not to extend or complete clinical training. Internal proposals due to the Office of Research Development by May 19th


  • Hartwell Fellows must hold a PhD or equivalent doctorate and be citizens of the United States.
  • The Fellowship mentor may not be a Hartwell Investigator currently funded as a recipient of an Individual Biomedical Research Award.
  • Fellows must commence their postdoctoral training no later than November 1, or the Fellowship award to the Institution may be rescinded.


  • Two postdoctoral fellows from Northwestern University may be funded through this program.


  • Internal Proposal Due: May 19, 2016 (by midnight)                               
  • Notification by: June 2, 2016
  • Documentation Due to Hartwell:  June 30, 2016

To be considered for this fellowship, you must submit an internal proposal containing the following required components:

  • Cover Page (one page, max): Include the following components:
    • ​Descriptive title
    • Your name, email address, phone number, department
    • Your PI's name
    • Statement confirming that you are a U.S. citizen and that your postdoctoral training will commence no later than November 1, 2016.
  • Proposal (one page, max): Clearly articulate the proposal to colleagues outside your field. Specifically address why the research is early-stage, innovative, and cutting-edge; and how the research will potentially benefit children of the United States; also explain how the Hartwell Fellowship will advance your professional goals.
  • NIH biosketch (2 pages, max).
  • Recommendation letter from your PI.

The proposal should be prepared as a SINGLE PDF FILE. It should be named "LastName-FirstInitial-Hartwell-Postdoc-2016", replacing "LastName" with your last name and "FirstInitial" with your first initial.


  • Click on the following link: grants.nubic.northwestern.edu/welcome.
  • Login with your NU NetID and password.
  • Under the “Limited Submissions - Office of Research Development” heading, click “Apply” next to the “Internal Proposal: Hartwell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship”.
  • Update your profile.
    • Populate the following fields: Phone, Title, and Department.
    • Click on “Save draft and continue” to save your profile and move to the competition application page.
  • Insert proposal title.  Click on “Save draft and continue.”
  • Click the Browse or Choose File button and navigate to your file on your hard drive or network.  Select your file and click “Submit”.  No supplemental documents are accepted.

You will receive a confirmation email from ORD indicating that your application was received.
