CREATE Program

The Center for Research Education and Training Enhancement (CREATE) at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) is a national program accepting applications from scholars (PhD Students and early-career investigators) seeking to increase the quality of their research education. This center is funded by the National Institutes of Health NIGMS Innovative Programs to Enhance Research Training (IPERT).

Eligibility Requirements 

  • MUST be a U.S. citizen in a PhD graduate research program or higher career position in biomedical sciences. Early career faculty who have received R-series funding in the last 5 years are ineligible. Must have not received prior federal career development awards. 
  • Support from academic advisor/supervisor and the applicant institution. 
  • Belong to groups underrepresented in health-related sciences (racial, ethnic, gender). 
  • Evidence of motivation and self -initiative in recommendations, personal essay and interview. 
  • Preference will be given to extramural graduate students, then post-doctorates, then early-career research/assistant professors, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. 

Award Description 
Funded 2-year career and self-development curriculum in the program. Participant will be mentored toward goals on their career development plan (i.e. designed to foster self-efficacy and metacognition), and are eligible to receive a travel award of $2,000. The award maybe used for conference travel, or a mentor sponsored/recommended training program. 

Research Follow-Up 
Participants will be asked for a final assessment 4 years after entering the program. Participants will have continued access to newly recorded programming. 

Application Process 
Participants (40) will be selected from a pool of extramural applications. Applicants will be required to submit an online application, CV, two recommendation letters (one from an advisor or supervisor), GRE scores, description of thesis or dissertation project, and a personal statement. CREATE fellows will be identified from the pool of applicants received by the application deadline of July 11, 2016. Participants will be notified of acceptance by August 1st, 2016 .The program will begin in the Fall Semester of 2016. 

Program Faculty 
The Team-Mentoring Network Consortium will be built from dedicated and experienced mentors who are: a) from diverse fields in basic, applied and translational sciences, b) visible in national scientific organizations to assist in career networking d) seeking opportunities for inter-institutional collaboration.
