Hooding 2022 Emails

Monday, March 22, 2022 | TGS PhD and MFA In-Person Hooding Ceremony on June 11

Dear 2021–22 PhD and MFA graduates,

The Graduate School will host an in-person PhD and MFA hooding ceremony on Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 PM in Ryan Fieldhouse (2333 Campus Drive) following all University and public health guidelines.

Our records indicate you are eligible to participate in this in-person ceremony. Below are additional details to help inform your decision on whether you wish to participate:

Ceremony Eligibility

2021–22 PhD and MFA graduates—Summer (September) 2021 through Spring (June) 2022—are invited to attend this hooding ceremony. Summer (September) 2022 graduates and beyond will be invited to participate in next year’s hooding ceremony in June 2023.

Partner School Participation

The Graduate School’s hooding ceremony is open to PhD and MFA graduates of TGS programs in the following schools and programs:

  • Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences
  • Kellogg School of Management
  • School of Communication
  • Feinberg School of Medicine
  • TGS Interdisciplinary Programs

All other PhD graduates, along with TGS master of arts (MA), master of science (MS), and master of public health (MPH) graduates, may be included in the ceremonies of their home program schools. Please refer to the list of 2022 School Convocations on the University Commencement website for details.

Hooding Experience

The hooding ceremony is a special recognition ceremony for PhD and MFA degree candidates during which a Northwestern graduate faculty member places the hood over the head of each graduate, signifying your success in fully completing your graduate program and welcoming you to the academy of scholars.

Faculty Representation

Pending any changes in public health guidance, we plan to return to our traditional hooding format this year. Each participating PhD and MFA graduate will invite a current Northwestern graduate faculty member to perform their hooding. This may be your adviser, another faculty member from your program, or a TGS associate dean. You may designate one faculty member to hood you. (The only exception is for students who have two equal co-chairs presiding over their dissertation committee.)

Please be sure to confirm the availability of your preferred faculty hooder(s) before you submit the Intent to Participate Form below.

Guest Tickets

Each participating graduate will automatically receive 10 guest tickets to the hooding ceremony. The link to request tickets will be sent to those graduates who express their intent to participate through our Intent to Participate Form below. Guests without tickets will not be permitted to enter the ceremony venue.

Livestream

The hooding ceremony will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person. We will provide more details by early June.

Regalia

Regalia is required to participate in the hooding ceremony. The deadline to order regalia is Wednesday, May 4. Please visit the regalia page of the Commencement website to find the ordering link, along with guidelines and further details.

  • MFA graduates will purchase the master’s package, which includes a cap, gown, tassel with signet, and hood. This regalia may be picked up at the Norris Bookstore or shipped to you for an additional fee. It is yours to keep.
  • PhD graduates will rent the doctoral package, which includes a tam, gown, tassel with signet, and hood. There also is an option to purchase fine-quality doctoral regalia. All doctoral rental regalia must be picked up in person at the Norris Bookstore. It cannot be shipped to you. Rental regalia must be returned after the hooding ceremony or the main Commencement ceremony. (All rental pieces must be returned except for the tassel.)
  • No additional accessories are required to participate in the hooding ceremony. (Note, the stole option listed on the regalia website is worn by bachelor’s degree recipients in lieu of a hood.)
  • For graduate students with financial need, please email the Commencement Office for information about the application process. All applications must be finalized by Wednesday, May 4.
University Commencement

Northwestern University’s main Commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, June 13 at 9:00 AM at Ryan Field (1501 Central Street). Please visit the Commencement website for more information. All TGS graduates—Summer (September) 2021 through Summer (September) 2022—may participate in this ceremony.

Wednesday, June 8, 2022 | TGS PhD and MFA Hooding Ceremony: Final Details for Graduates

Dear participating graduates,

We are excited to welcome you to our PhD and MFA Hooding Ceremony on Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 PM CDT in Ryan Fieldhouse.

To ensure a smooth and successful event, we have compiled the following information and helpful tips for you and your guests.

Ceremony Venue

The hooding ceremony will take place in Ryan Fieldhouse at 2333 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL 60208. Ryan Fieldhouse is located on the north end of the Evanston campus to the east of Lincoln Street and Sheridan Road.

Important note:  Ryan Fieldhouse is NOT connected to or located near Ryan Field, which is on Central Street.

The ceremony will be held on the practice football field, which is an indoor, climate-controlled space. You will be walking on artificial grass, and we recommend comfortable footwear. High heels are permitted but, if worn, it may be difficult to navigate the artificial grass.

Parking

There is a parking garage attached to Ryan Fieldhouse that may be used free of charge on the day of the ceremony. It is Lot 105 on this Evanston campus parking map. The normal parking fees for all Northwestern University parking lots are waived during Commencement weekend.

Arrival Time

Doors will open at 1:00 PM. Please arrive no later than 1:30 PM to ensure you have sufficient to time to check in and locate your place in the graduate processional lines. Graduates and guests should use the northwest entrance (on the ground floor lobby next to the parking garage) and take the stairs or elevator to the second floor.

Important note: Only water is permitted inside Ryan Fieldhouse and will be provided.

Guest Tickets

You should have received an email from NU Athletics with 10 guest tickets on Thursday, June 2. Please check your spam folder if you do not see it and be sure to forward these tickets to your guests.

For instructions on how to download or transfer your tickets, visit NUSports.com/MobileTickets. To transfer tickets, you will need to login to your account here. Further questions can be directed to the NU Athletics Department at cat-tix@northwestern.edu or 847-491-2287 or 888-GO-PURPLE (467-8775).

All guests must have electronic tickets displayed on a mobile device to enter the ceremony space. One device can be used to display all tickets for scanning.

Graduate Check-in and Gift Bag

When you arrive, please go to the second floor then proceed down the West Concourse corridor to the right of the indoor football field where the ceremony will be held. A graduate check-in station will be located across from the restrooms. You must check in to receive your seat assignment and ceremony card. Please review this card upon receipt to make sure all of the information is correct.

Important note: Please do not lose your ceremony card. You will hand it to the reader of names before crossing the stage during the ceremony.

Once you receive your card, you will proceed to your assigned processional line. You will line up according to the Processional Number located on your card. Note that your Processional Number is different than your Hooding Order Number. Seating for graduates is assigned, based on your hooding order and cannot be changed. As a good rule of thumb, you should find yourselves lined up with other individuals from your program.

There will be a small gift bag under your seat; please remember to take it with you when leaving.

Regalia

You must wear regalia to participate in the ceremony.

Student regalia is available for pickup at the Norris Bookstore (1999 Campus Dr.) The schedule for regalia pickup at the Norris bookstore can be found here. Regalia that was shipped to Norris Bookstore must be picked up by 2:00 PM CDT on Friday, June 10. You are welcome to send a proxy on your behalf to pick it up ahead of Friday’s deadline. Please direct any questions about your regalia order to the Norris Bookstore by calling 847.491.3992 or emailing Steve Hannen.

If you rented your regalia (doctoral graduates), there will be return stations located outside Ryan Fieldhouse for you to drop off your regalia after your recessional outside.

Important note: Please wear the tassel on the left side of the cap (MFAs) or tam (PhDs) and remember to remove it and leave it on your seat before approaching the stage to be hooded.

Face Masks

In accordance with Northwestern University guidance, indoor masking is strongly recommended in areas where distancing is not possible. Graduates, faculty, and staff are encouraged to wear masks if that makes them more comfortable, and surgical masks will be available onsite.

Hooding Instructions

Please familiarize yourself with these hooding instructions prior to the ceremony.

Important note: We understand everyone may have a different comfort level with an in-person ceremony taking place during a pandemic. If you do not wish to be hooded on stage, please wear your hood over your gown instead of carrying it in your hand to denote you do not wish to be hooded. Nods of acknowledgement, handshakes, or hugs all are acceptable based on the comfort level of the graduate and faculty hooder.

Hooding Processional and Recessional Walking Paths

Please familiarize yourself with this ceremony map outlining the walking paths.

At the beginning of the ceremony, there will be a student processional. Student marshals will lead two processional lines from the West Concourse onto the field and to their respective processional aisles. They will then march you down the aisles and help file you into your respective rows.

Each student will have an assigned seat marked with your name and program. It is important that you sit in your assigned seat in order to be hooded in the correct order.

When it is time for your row to line up near the stage, you will exit your row from the right. When it is your turn to be hooded, you will come up the stairs from downstage left and cross to downstage center. There you will meet your faculty hooder who will do the honors of hooding you.

After you are hooded, Dean Mayo will shake your hand (or nod in acknowledgement based on your comfort level), and you will proceed off the stage, stop for a photo, and reenter your row from the opposite side. Marshals and TGS staff members will help guide you.

Hold on to your ceremony card until it is your turn to be hooded. You will hand it to a marshal once you reach the stage and they will give it to the reader of names.

There will be a faculty recessional at the end of the ceremony, followed by a graduate recessional. These recessionals will have different exit routes, and graduates will be led directly outside of the building.

Livestream

There will be a link on the homepage of our TGS website on Saturday, June 11 that will direct viewers to a livestream of the ceremony, which will be closed-captioned. You also can access the livestream through a personalized graduation recognition webpage, which you will receive via email later this week.

Commencement App

The Graduation Weekend 2022 Guidebook provides information about all of Northwestern’s graduation events, ceremonies, and start times. Connect to the Guidebook on any device.

Social Media Hashtags

Please use #NU2022 and #TGSatNU when sharing your ceremony day experiences on social media.

After the Hooding Ceremony

There is no formal reception after the hooding ceremony, but everyone will receive grab-and-go refreshments when exiting the venue and may reunite with others outside. To help ensure everyone’s safety, we ask everyone to exit Ryan Fieldhouse immediately after the hooding ceremony.

The University has designated the north service driveway that runs the length of the Fieldhouse as a gathering location after the ceremony. It spans from the street to the beach. The beach end of the driveway may make a nice spot for photos.
