Why did you choose Northwestern?
Northwestern offered me a teaching assistantship and tuition scholarship and was a highly rated school for science programs.

How would you describe your research and/or work to a non-academic audience? What was it then and/or what it is now?
I followed a career in various areas of biochemistry that included pharmaceutical research, automation, clinical laboratory instruments, and management of hospital clinical laboratories. I was a researcher at the NIH and a professor at the UCSD medical school.

Tell us who or what inspired your research and/or work.
I developed an interest in science and nature at an early age without any particular role models.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?
My research produced some important advancements in laboratory medicine and helped shape ongoing developments. I also had a role in mentoring many students and employees and enjoyed seeing their success.

Tell us about a current achievement or something you're working on that excites you.
I have always been actively involved in professional organizations and served as President of two leading ones. I continue to be involved in my regional groups organizing meetings and speakers. I am also interested in Northwestern activities and am currently Treasurer of the NU Club of Orange County.

What advice would you give your younger self or someone considering a similar path?
A professional career requires determination, sacrifice, and hard work to succeed, and there are no substitutes. However, there are many personal rewards if the goal is accomplished.
