Why did you choose Northwestern?
I chose to earn my doctorate at Northwestern due to world-class research and amazing professors. The whole learning environment in Evanston and the sense of community and collaboration within the Materials Science and Engineering Department was a significant draw.

How would you describe your research and/or work to a non-academic audience? What was it then and/or what it is now?
I researched ceramic coatings for the energy and aviation industry. Specifically, I investigated thermal barrier coatings that provide heat protection for engine components. I then applied that knowledge in my first corporate job after graduating from Northwestern where I researched advanced coatings for environmental protection of engine parts.

Tell us who or what inspired your research and/or work.
My research adviser, Katherine Faber, provided tremendous guidance and inspiration. She helped me tackle all the ups and downs that come with graduate research. We still stay in touch and she continues to be a role model for me.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?
I'm most proud of founding and running a successful export compliance consulting company, Traliance. Portions of the export regulations have a strong scientific bend to them. The engineering training that I received through my Northwestern experience has been instrumental in the success of the business.

Tell us about a current achievement or something you're working on that excites you.
I started a local business networking group called CREW, which is targeted to support women business owners. We developed a strong rhythm with a growing number of participants in the last few years. However, the pandemic has forced us to rethink and retool how we stay connected and continue to provide value to our members. It's a big challenge that also excites me as I'm passionate about helping other women carve out their own entrepreneurial path.

What advice would you give your younger self or someone considering a similar path?
You can do anything! My younger self would have definitely benefited from truly taking that to heart. There is no set path that one needs to take in life. Life is all about figuring out what gets you excited and how you can best contribute to the ever-changing world. Your path continues to morph with your personal needs, family situation, and professional interests.
