Graduate Student Appreciation Week 2022

Graduate Student Appreciation Week (GSAW) 2022 will take place from Monday, April 4 – Friday, April 8, 2022 (with some bonus events on Saturday, April 9) and provides a terrific opportunity to celebrate and recognize PhD and master's students in The Graduate School (TGS)! Below is a comprehensive list of GSAW events and giveaways that are free and open to all TGS students.

Presented by The Graduate School (TGS), TGS's Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) and Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience (NUIN)

To celebrate GSAW 2022, TGS is giving away 75 Northwestern Champion® sweatshirts from the Norris Bookstore in partnership with the TGS Office of Diversity and Inclusion and NU Interdepartmental Neuroscience (NUIN).

To enter the daily raffle, please complete this form by 11:59 PM CDT on Thursday, April 7. You only need to submit one entry to be considered for each daily giveaway. Please submit your entry by Friday, April 1 to increase your chances of winning.

During April 4-8, TGS will announce 15 winners around noon each day on our social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) as well as notify winners by email. Winners will be able to choose one of four sweatshirt options and their preferred size from the Norris Bookstore website. Limit one sweatshirt prize per student.

60-Minute Massage Giveaway

Presented by NU Recreation, The Graduate School (TGS) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA)

In celebration of GSAW 2022, NU Recreation is giving away 10 60-minute massages in partnership with The Graduate School (TGS) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA). Massage therapy is one of the most effective ways to combat stress and enhance wellness. Massage therapists will work with raffle winners to customize their experience and cater to individual needs. Effective massage therapy techniques, such as Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sports, Hot Stone, Aromatherapy, and Reflexology may be employed. 

TGS will announce the winners on Friday, April 8, and NU Recreation will contact them via email. To enter this raffle, please complete the form below by 11:59 PM CDT on Thursday, April 7.

Green Home Certification

Presented by the sustainNU

You can be green and save green with the Green Home Certification program by sustainNU! A simple checklist provides you with the resources and knowledge to make your space greener and healthier. In no time, you’ll be on your way to saving money, brightening your physical space, and fostering positive well-being at home.

Certify your home or apartment with your roommates, family, or on your own. In honor of GSAW, three lucky participants will receive a prize for reducing their personal impact when completing the activity by Sunday, April 30. Start at Green Home Certification where you can download the checklist and submit your certification survey. You will receive a certificate to confirm your Green Home status and the opportunity to be entered into the raffle!

Virtual Writing Retreat

Presented by Graduate Writing Place

To mark GSAW 2022, the Graduate Writing Place is hosting a special Writing Retreat or virtual co-working session. The goal of Writing Retreats is to provide regular opportunities throughout the quarter for graduate students to write together. During each four-hour retreat, writers work in the main room, keeping mics muted and/or cameras off and using the chat feature to share goals, ask and answer questions, and check in with each other. Retreats also feature two breakout rooms for conversation (“The Break Room”) and for collaboration (“The Workshop"). All graduate students are welcome to drop in at any point during Writing Retreats, but registration with Eventbrite is required.

Boxing Class

Presented by the Graduate Student Association (GSA)

Do you want to burn calories by hitting 100-pound bags? Join GSA and Title Boxing Club to enjoy a free 45-minute boxing class! The instructor will lead you through explosive boxing rounds and no prior experience is required. Hand wraps and gloves will be provided.

Drink and Draw features artist and Mini Course drawing instructor Stephanie Lupu, who will guide you through a drawing process using compressed charcoals. Presented by The Center for Civic Engagement

The Center for Civic Engagement is offering 20-minute Zoom consultations to graduate students interested in developing a relationship with a Chicago-area nonprofit. Whether you’re looking for a volunteer opportunity, internship, or to seed a research or artistic collaboration, you’ll walk away with a list of organizations tailored to your interests and be entered in a raffle to win a copy of In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower: How Universities Are Plundering Our Cities by Davarian Baldwin. The Center for Civic Engagement maintains relationships with hundreds of local organizations and has placed more than 150 PhD students at 90+ nonprofits and governmental agencies through their practicum programs.

Join GSA for a happy hour at Tapville Social to celebrate the end of Graduate Student Appreciation Week! Appetizers and drinks will be available for attendees. $15 Pour Passes that can be redeemed on the Tap Wall will be distributed to the first 100 attendees. RSVP does not guarantee a drink card. Norris Mini Course: One Day Wheel Throwing Workshop
3:30 PM – 5:30PM in Evanston

Presented by Norris University Center and The Graduate School (TGS)

Want to dip your hands in a little clay? Come join us for a two-hour workshop where you'll learn the fundamental steps of throwing. Participants will get to throw as much as they can but will only be choosing one piece to keep. Participants will get to choose from four different glaze colors to match their perfect creation. Projects will be available for pick-up two weeks from the workshop's completion. No experience is required! Space is limited and advance registration is required. Supplies included.

Experience Northwestern: King James at Steppenwolf Theatre 
8:00PM – 10:00PM in Chicago

Presented by The Graduate School (TGS)

As part of the Experience Northwestern series and in celebration of GSAW 2022, The Graduate School will raffle off 20 pairs of tickets to see Steppenwolf Theatre's production of King James, Rajiv Joseph's clever and fast-paced comedy about two friends whose turbulent relationship is best navigated through their shared love of basketball—and the endless amiable arguments that erupt from that love.

The deadline to enter the raffle is Sunday, April 3, at 11:59PM CDT. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 4.
