Technology Fee Update from the International Office

Earlier this year, the International Office announced that international students would pay a $50 fee for the purchase of software to improve infrastructure and support for our international students, given the federal government’s requirements for reporting registration, enrollment, and employment, among other aspects. In addition, the various changes in policies, such as revisions to its “unlawful presence” policy, make compliance and reporting requirements challenging under the current technology.  

After considering feedback from the Northwestern community, the University will cover this cost going forward. Students who paid the $50 fee in the fall will receive a refund to their student account. The University cares deeply about its international student community and remains committed to providing you with support. We sincerely apologize if the announcement of the fee sent any message to the contrary – that was certainly never our intention.
