Avoid Late Fees on Your Student Account

Below is some important information regarding how and when late fees are applied to your student account and some tips on how to avoid them:

  • To avoid late fees, please check and pay your student account balance every month.
  • If the outstanding charges on your student account are over $499, a late fee will be applied once per quarter until the balance due falls under this amount.
  • There is no cap on how many late fees can be applied. Late fees will continue to accumulate as long as your account has an outstanding balance of $500 or more.
  • A registration hold for the next quarter is applied the day after charges are due if there is an outstanding balance on your account.
  • For TGS students, the tuition and fee charges for a quarter will appear on the next monthly invoice after registering for classes.
  • There may be charges on your account that are not covered by your funding package, including library fines, parking fines, health services, and the quarterly activity fee, which you are responsible for paying.
  • You will receive an email each month notifying you that your bill is available. You will also receive an email when a registration hold is placed on your account. It is important to pay attention to these emails and to check your account in CAESAR at least once a month when the bill is generated.
  • Upon request, one late fee may be waived. Waiving subsequent late fees requires written request and consultation with the Student Finance office. You can email Student Finance at studentaccounts-ev@northwestern.edu (Evanston) or studentaccounts-chicago@northwestern.edu (Chicago).
Please refer to the Late and Returned Payment Penalties and the Common Fees sections of the Student Finance website for more information.
