Office of Diversity & Inclusion Welcomes HSI Pathways Fellows to Campus
The Graduate School Office of Diversity & Inclusion was pleased to recently host undergraduate fellows from the Hispanic Serving Institution Pathways to the Professoriate (HSI Pathways) Program from Sunday, October 7 to Tuesday, October 9 on Northwestern’s Evanston campus.
The goal of HSI Pathways is to increase the number of Latinx professors in humanities disciplines at colleges and universities in the United States. Northwestern is one of five institutions chosen to take part in this $5 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
This year, 10 fellows from three institutions (California State University, Northridge; Florida International University; and the University of Texas at El Paso) visited Northwestern to learn more about our doctoral programs and research opportunities.
After arriving in Evanston on Sunday afternoon, HSI Pathways fellows joined current TGS students, faculty, and our D&I team for dinner and casual conversation at Giordano’s Pizza (a Chicago classic!).
Throughout the day on Monday, fellows attended information sessions about how to apply to graduate school and specific programs Northwestern offers. In addition, they participated in a panel discussion with current TGS graduate students and faculty and met with HSI Pathways faculty mentors one-on-one to discuss research topics and personal statements.
Assistant Dean of Diversity & Inclusion, Damon Williams, partnered with HSI Pathways site coordinators to ensure the program’s success.
“Monday was full of information about Northwestern,” Williams said. “But, the point of HSI Pathways is to get to know these promising Latinx fellows and give them the opportunity to become acquainted with our students and faculty and all that Northwestern has to offer. We hope to see them apply in Fall 2019.”
