Summer 2019 Predoctoral Career Diversity Workshop in the Humanities

Explore ways you can leverage your graduate training and skills in careers within and outside the academy or tenure-track system! The 2019 Humanities Without Walls (HWW) consortium predoctoral career diversity summer workshop is currently open for application. This three-week, residential summer workshop provides fellowships for graduate students who are working towards, but have not yet received, a PhD in a humanities or humanistic social sciences discipline.
The workshop introduces PhD students to public humanities work in fields such as public media, arts administration, nonprofits, government, NGOs, and foundations, as well as non-faculty positions in colleges and universities. Presentations, networking events, and field trips provide insider looks at various careers from the viewpoint of professionals, and provide exposure to the wide variety of contributions humanities PhDs can make in these organizations.
The workshop encourages humanities doctoral students to think of themselves as agents of the public humanities and showcase opportunities beyond the walls of the academy in an uncertain academic job climate.
Graduates from the workshop will emerge with a network of contacts in a range of professional realms; a significantly broadened sense of the career possibilities that await humanities PhDs; a cohort of fellows from whom they may draw support and advice; and a set of resources aimed at helping them advance into various realms of the public humanities. When: Summer 2019 - July 15-August 2 (workshop is all day, 5 days/week for 3 weeks)
Fellowship Award: $5,000 (to cover travel to and from the summer workshop, most meals, and all incidentals).
Northwestern Application Deadline: October 8, 2018
To be considered, Northwestern doctoral students must submit their applications to the Kaplan Humanities Institute via an online portal by Monday, October 8, 2018.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a limited-submission application. Eligible doctoral students must be nominated for this fellowship by their home institution, and only one nomination may be made to HWW by each university; thus, one candidate will be chosen from the Northwestern applicants and nominated to Humanities Without Walls. Fellowship awards will be announced by the end of January 2019.
