“Practicum in Developing Assessments” CIRTL Online Course

Develop two commonly used STEM assessments, multiple choice questions and classroom activities, and strengthen them through peer-review feedback in this 3-part online course offered through the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL).

Course Description:
Fair and consistent measurement of learning outcomes can be extremely difficult for new instructors. Creating assessment tools which measure your intended student learning goals is critical to the success of students in undergraduate courses.

This 3-session short course is intended to help participants develop and receive feedback for two commonly used STEM assessments, multiple choice questions and classroom activities (CATs). Each session, participants will complete pre-reading assignments related to the assessment topic. In between sessions, participants will share their draft assessments and provide peer feedback prior to attending the next synchronous session.

The first synchronous session will review assessment terminology and the basics of assessment best practices. The second and third synchronous sessions will utilize case studies and small group work to guide discussions and provide peer feedback on developing clear and reliable assessments. Each session will also include conversations on how to use assessment data to guide reflective and inclusive instruction.

To receive the most benefit from this course, participants should have some experience in instruction, such as TAing, guest-lecturing, or serving as the instructor of record for an undergraduate course. Participants will be asked to create and/or share assessments and to provide constructive feedback for other participants’ assessments, and should expect to spend 2-3 hours per session on work outside of class.
