Changes to TGS Internal Fellowships and Grants
The Graduate School (TGS) recently evaluated its internal fellowships and grants to ensure these funding opportunities align with our funding policies.
As a result, the following changes will go into effect in September 2018. (All other internal TGS fellowships and grants remain the same.)
Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts (CIRA)
Given that funding for this initiative has ended, CIRA grants to support projects in the arts are no longer available. Students seeking grants for creative projects in the arts are encouraged to apply for the Graduate Research Grant, which was recently expanded to better accommodate applications for creative projects.
Presidential and Nicholson Fellowships
To better align with our overall funding model, the eligibility criteria has shifted to ensure students are nominated early enough so that funding does not exceed year five. This shift has been communicated to and does not impact current Presidential Fellows.
- Going forward, students may be nominated for the Presidential Fellowship in years two, three, or four.
- Those nominated in year two or three are eligible for two years of Presidential Fellowship funding (stipend, tuition), while those nominated in year four are eligible for one year of Presidential Fellowship funding (stipend, tuition). Students are still expected to participate in the Fellowship whether funded or unfunded.
- In addition, the deadlines for nominations and applications for the Presidential Fellowship are now in winter quarter, allowing programs more time for an internal nomination process.
- Students may be nominated for the one-year Nicholson Fellowship in years two, three, or four.
The Graduate School Co-Sponsorship Grant
TGS previously offered grants to fund events and programming that benefit graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows, including the Catalyst Grant, Mellon Cluster Catalyst Grant, Community Building Grant, and Professional Development Grant. To simplify the application process, these opportunities have been combined into one TGS Co-Sponsorship Grant.
Conference Travel Grant (CTG)
Effective September 1, 2018, eligible students may use a CTG to travel to conferences/seminars even if they are not primary presenters. Students will be able to decide, with their adviser and program, how and when to use a CTG, whether it is to make a presentation on behalf of the University or for professional/career development. Program review and approval are still required.
