Two Northwestern Students Named Mellon-ACLS Public Fellows in 2018
Two Northwestern graduate students have been selected as part of the eighth annual cohort of Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows. This year’s 24 fellows will take up two-year, full-time positions with top nonprofit organizations and government agencies working in the fields of policy, civil rights, arts and culture, and the media. The Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program is made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The 2018 Public Fellows, who represent 16 fields of study in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, were selected from a record number of applications on the basis of their academic and non-academic accomplishments, as well as their demonstrated commitment to their chosen career fields. All applications are read by peer reviewers whose expertise covers a range of humanistic disciplines as well as a broad spectrum of career experience beyond the professoriate. Finalists selected through this process are then interviewed by senior staff at the program’s partnering host organizations.
The fellowship provides PhDs in the humanities or humanistic social sciences with career-building experience and offers an annual stipend of $67,500, health insurance, and additional funding for professional development. Fellows receive professional mentoring from their host organizations as well as peer mentoring through the Public Fellows alumni council.
