TGS Summer 2018 Registration Guidelines

Below are some general guidelines regarding summer enrollment for students in The Graduate School. If you have any questions that aren’t answered below, please contact gradservices@northwestern.edu.

Summer 2018 registration opened Monday, April 9, 2018. All students who receive funding over summer must register as follows:

1st and 2nd year PhD students who are funded typically enroll in 3 units of departmental Research 590.

  • Students should make certain they are enrolled in 3 units, otherwise they are not considered full time and this will cause problems with their funding. Here is information about how to edit enrollments to add units.
  • Programs must set up 590 courses with the Office of the Registrar.
  • 590 is generally a variable unit course (may be 1, 2, 3, or 4 units per quarter).
  • 590 must be taken on a P/NP grading basis.
  • Some students may opt to take language or other courses over the summer. This is fine and they can supplement those enrollments with one or two units of 590, as necessary, in order to maintain full time enrollment.

3rd year and beyond PhD students who are funded typically enroll in TGS 500

  • TGS 500 is zero unit course that provides full-time status; students do not need to specify number of units when enrolling.
  • Some students may opt to take language or other courses over the summer. This is fine and they can supplement those enrollments with TGS 500 in order to maintain full time enrollment.  If students receive an error message for having exceeded the unit load, they should contact their Student Services Representative for assistance.

MFA students who are funded typically enroll in TGS 588 (Resident Master’s Study) or some combination of coursework and 590 research enrollments. Students (PhD or Masters) who are not funded do not need to enroll during the summer unless they are:

  • An international student and summer will be the last quarter of registration at NU (students should consult with the International Office before registering) or
  • Planning to receive student loans during summer and must be registered full time, or
  • Planning to defer loans and require summer registration in order to defer loans for an additional quarter (students should consult with Graduate Financial Aid with questions)

Students who enroll in TGS 512 are not charged the activity fee nor do they have a valid UPass for summer quarter.
