Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Stipends, Tuition/Fees and Other Budgetary Levels Effective for Fiscal Year 2018

 (Notice Number: NOT-OD-18-175)

The National Institute of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) have announced stipend levels for trainees and fellows supported by Kirschstein-NRSA awards in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. In addition, the Training Related Expenses and the Institutional Allowance for postdoctoral trainees and fellows have been increased.

Items of Note:

  • The budgetary categories apply only to Kirschstein-NRSA awards made with FY 2018 funds.  All FY 2018 awards previously issued using NOT-OD-17-084 and NOT-OD-17-003 will be revised to adjust funding to the FY 2018 levels.
  • Appointments to institutional training grants that have already been awarded in FY 2018 must be amended to reflect the FY 2018 stipend levels.  Retroactive adjustments or supplementation of stipends or other budgetary categories with Kirschstein-NRSA funds for an award made prior to October 1, 2017 are not permitted.
  • Current stipend levels are to be used in the preparation of future competing and non-competing NRSA institutional training grant and individual fellowship applications.
  • The amounts for tuition do not change, but the Training Related Expenses and the Institutional Allowance for postdoctoral trainees and fellows are increased by $1,000.
