Resources for Graduate Student Travel

In preparation for summer travel, we are sharing Northwestern's graduate student policies as well as some helpful resources from the Office of Global Safety and Security (OGSS).

Loaner Laptops for Higher-Risk Destinations

Northwestern students or employees who travel internationally with sensitive or proprietary information on their laptops are advised to contact the Office for Export Controls Compliance (OECC) to discuss when and where a “clean” laptop should be used. Additional information can be found on the OECC website (FAQ #8) and by reading the OECC laptop memorandum. General tips on how to secure electronic devices during travel can be found on the OGSS and NUIT websites

Travel Heath/Immunizations

If you or your students are planning summertime travel abroad, don’t forget that exposure to some health risks can be mitigated by immunizations or prophylactic medications. Supplies of some vaccines, such as Yellow Fever, are limited, and others require multiple doses or need to be in your system a while to become effective, so be sure to plan well in advance of travel.

Revised Student Travel Policy

Changes to the U.S. DOS Travel Advisory System led to modification of the undergraduate travel policy, which governs their travel to Level 3 and Level 4 destinations. Graduate students planning travel to these countries must sign a special release. Review our updated graduate student travel polices page for more information.

Visit the OGSS website for additional resources.
