Message From Dean Woodruff: Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate Student Support

The following message was sent to humanities and social sciences PhD students on Thursday, May 10.

Dear TGS Humanities and Social Sciences PhD Students:

Based on recent feedback, The Graduate School (TGS) would like to clarify that we have not changed our graduate student support – which includes tuition, stipend, and health insurance support – for any of our PhD students.

TGS provides graduate student support to all PhD students for at least 5 years. Our humanities and social sciences PhD students may bank up to 4 quarters of funding through interdisciplinary graduate assistantships, fellowship awards, cluster quarters, etc., to be used through their 6th year. While exceptions have been made in the past, PhD students beyond their 5th year are not eligible for TGS-funded interdisciplinary graduate assistantships.

PhD students in any field of study may be funded through external or non-TGS funding beyond 5 years of TGS graduate student support (e.g., PhD students in STEM fields are funded through a mixture of TGS and federal/external funding). Please contact your Director of Graduate Study or email TGS Student Funding at tgs-fa@northwestern.edu with any questions about your graduate student support.

Our goal is to ensure that all PhD students are supported equitably.

Sincerely,

Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD
