NBER Report: The Impact of Postdoctoral Fellowships on a Future Independent Career

A National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) report examined the career outcomes from researchers that applied for an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) (F32) between 1996 -2008. The study found that those who applied were more likely to receive subsequent NIH research awards and NIH R01 awards. Those who received the award were slightly more likely to receive future NIH funding. A Nature Career Brief highlights important data from the study. A related study of researchers in the Netherlands showed that early funding success can have a large impact on the ability to obtain later funding.
