Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity - Nutrition, Ohio State University

The Human Nutrition Program within the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher – Nutrition Scientist to lead controlled human clinical trials focusing on the health benefits of functional foods and bioactive food components.

ABOUT HUMAN NUTRITION AT OSU
Work performed in Human Nutrition encompasses the full range of nutrition sciences beginning with cellular and mechanistic studies through translational research that helps to establish evidence-based dietary recommendations. The collaborative environment consists of 13 tenure-track faculty and more than 50 graduate students, dietetic interns, postdoctoral scholars, and support staff who leverage their comprehensive biomolecular and clinical facilities to conduct innovative research that helps to achieve optimal diet and health.

The Human Nutrition program is located within the Department of Human Sciences in the College of Education and Human Ecology. They are known for developing some of Ohio’s and the nation’s best nutrition scientists and dietitians in all professional sectors, including academia, industry, and government.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This position is for a full-time post-doctoral researcher/nutrition scientist who will be under the supervision of Richard Bruno, PhD, RD in the Human Nutrition Program.

  • Major responsibilities including leading and managing controlled human clinical trials focusing on dietary bioactive components to alleviate inflammation in relation to cardiometabolic health and intestinal barrier function.
  • The position requires a scientific background in nutrition science, dietetics, or closely related clinical or biomedical field.
  • The individual will provide day-to-day leadership to coordinate participant recruitment, maintain institutional and federal regulatory compliance (e.g., IRB, ClinicalTrials.gov), design and implement controlled diets, collect and analyze biospecimens and/or coordinate collaborative efforts, and also maintain detailed study records.
  • The individual will also promote a collaborative environment among the research team, and also between participating investigators from food science, medicine, biostatistics, and microbiology.
  • He/she will conduct experiments utilizing spectrophotometry, ELISA, LC-MS/HPLC, and microbiota analysis techniques.
  • He/she will assist with training research personnel and prepare standard operating procedures, abstracts, manuscripts and presentations.

Opportunities also will be provided to present research findings at scientific meetings, engage in grantsmanship activities, and develop and test independent hypotheses.

POSITION ENVIRONMENT
The Bruno Lab, including its clinical and biochemical facilities, is centrally located on the OSU Columbus campus in Campbell Hall. The team-centric environment is interdisciplinary and includes graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and strong collaborative relationships with investigators having expertise in food science, medicine/cardiometabolic disease management, biostatistics, and microbial ecology and functions.

This postdoctoral researcher position is supported by a multi-year grant, and the position is classified as a 1-year term position that has high potential to be renewed for additional years subject to candidate performance and continued availability of funding.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:

  • PhD or equivalent in nutrition, dietetics, or closely related clinical, health/wellness, or biomedical field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with clinical research and statistical procedures
Desired requirements include:
  • Experience with biochemical methodologies (e.g., HPLC/LC-MS, spectrophotometry, ELISA, DNA extraction, bioinformatics) and/or phlebotomy is preferred, and training is available
  • Experience with formulating controlled diets in human intervention studies
