Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity - Complex Disciplinary Environments

General Notes: This position will report to Dr. Simone Ispa-Landa, School of Education and Social Policy, Northwestern University. The appointment will be for one year with the option of renewal.

Required Application Materials: A CV, Letter of Interest, up to three representative papers, and three letters of recommendation.

Purpose: To assist with the conduct of ethnographic research on how adolescent students, parents, teachers, police, social workers, and administrators navigate a complex disciplinary environment.

Essential Functions: The postdoctoral fellow will participate in all phases of the project including developing instruments; qualitative data collection; data analysis, and the publication of results. The principal investigator will encourage the postdoctoral scholar to develop publications that build on his or her emerging research agenda. The postdoctoral scholar must be able and willing to travel to research sites; work both individually and as part of a team; and provide supervision to undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in sociology or related field. Strong background in the sociology of children and youth, gender, and race, as well as a qualitative background. Experience collecting and analyzing ethnographic data. Strong written and oral communication skills. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with research on school discipline and with interviewing techniques. Experience working with school districts.
