Holiday Message from Dean Woodruff

Created: January 2, 2018

Dear Members of the Graduate Community,
Happy holidays! This year, I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received from staff, faculty, and, especially, the student and postdoctoral populations at Northwestern. As a TGS alumna myself, I am thrilled to serve our community as Dean of The Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education.
I want to congratulate our most recent class of master’s and PhD graduates. Last week, we had 291 master’s and 114 PhD students complete their work for fall 2017 graduation. I am delighted to recognize each of these graduates for their accomplishments. Our graduate population at Northwestern is one of the most talented and creative groups in the country, and each of you have the potential to change the world we live in.

I also want to acknowledge your advocacy regarding the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. As you are aware, this bill originally proposed a tax on tuition, threatening to penalize graduate students and limit the availability of graduate education to all. The final bill, which passed Congress on Wednesday, December 20, and is expected to be signed into law before the end of the year, does not include the provision to tax graduate student tuition waivers. This is great news for higher education. Thank you for your efforts in opposition of the bill, and for staying engaged in the political process over the past few weeks. The Graduate School will continue to follow issues that impact graduate education and our populations of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Each day I hear from many of you about your research, scholarship, and teaching at Northwestern and I’m looking forward to hearing more in the new year.
On behalf of the staff of The Graduate School, I wish you a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to many productive days to come in 2018.
My best,
Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD
