Update on Proposed Tax on Graduate Students

Created: December 8, 2017

Dear TGS Community:
We have been closely following the proceedings in the Senate regarding the tax bill. As of late Friday afternoon, we, like you, are still waiting to see details on the final bill and the Senate vote. I have received concerned emails from many of you, and I want to assure you that we will continue to closely monitor the situation throughout the weekend.

As I noted in my last email, harmful changes to the tax treatment of tuition assistance (IRC Section 117 (d)) are not included in the Senate version, and that information has been verified by our Government Relations group. Please note that the House Ways and Means Chairman, Kevin Brady, is on record indicating he would remove the harmful tuition assistance provisions during the final merger process. Please review the transcript of his November 15 remarks on the House floor.
TGS will stay in touch with you regarding implications to our graduate student welfare.
Please continue to do your good work in your labs, scholarship, and teaching and I will keep you in the loop as the situation develops.
My best,

Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D.
Dean, The Graduate School and
Associate Provost for Graduate Education
