TGS students in PhD programs based in the School of Communication will receive 19 quarters of guaranteed funding

Modified: September 28, 2016

Dear Students and Faculty in the School of Communication,

We are pleased to announce that effective immediately, students enrolled in Ph.D. programs based in the School of Communication (Theatre and Drama; Performance Studies; Screen Cultures; Communication Studies; Media, Technology and Society; Technology and Social Behavior; and Communication Sciences and Disorders) will be guaranteed 19 quarters of funding, contingent on successful progress in their academic programs.
Because The Graduate School and SoC have worked together to expand the funding available to support SoC PhD students, this five-year funding model has already become the norm in SoC. The same is also true in the other Northwestern schools. SoC is pleased to join with them to establish a university-wide guarantee of five years of funding (19 quarters) for every Ph.D. student admitted to TGS.
The guarantee of 19 quarters of funding will apply not only to the students admitted this year, but also to those admitted in the past five years, i.e., all Ph.D. students who began their studies in 2012 or later. In the coming weeks, affected students will have their admission/offer letters revised and reissued to reflect this change. They may also receive additional communication about the new commitment in the coming months.
And, as always, if you have questions about whether or how your funding will be affected by the change, please direct them to TGS Financial Aid, tgs-fa@northwestern.edu. The staff will be happy to answer your questions.

Warmest Regards,

Dwight A. McBride, PhD, Dean of The Graduate School
Barbara J. O’Keefe, PhD, Dean of the School of Communication
