Call for Applications: Summer 2017 National Pre-doctoral Workshop in the Humanities

Modified: August 26, 2016

Summer 2017 National Pre-doctoral Workshop in the Humanities
DEADLINE: September 30, 2016

Explore humanities careers outside the traditional tenure-track academic system! The 2017 Humanities Without Walls consortium pre-doctoral summer workshop is currently open for application. This three-week, residential summer workshop provides fellowships for graduate students who are working towards, but have not yet received, a PhD in a humanities discipline.

The workshop introduces PhD students to public humanities projects and industries in fields such as public media, arts administration, government, NGOs and foundations. Presentations, networking events and field trips provide insider looks at various careers from the viewpoint of professionals, and provide exposure to the wide variety of contributions humanities PhDs can make in these organizations. The workshop will conclude with a two-day National Public Humanities Summit featuring an evening plenary session and a day of lectures and discussions focused on developments in the public humanities.

Graduates from the workshop will emerge with a network of contacts in a range of professional realms; a significantly broadened sense of the career possibilities that await humanities PhDs; a cohort of “alt-ac” fellows from whom they may draw support and advice; and a set of resources aimed at helping them advance into the various realms of the public humanities.

Where: Chicago
When: Summer 2017 - specific dates TBD, most likely July 17-August 5 (workshop is all day, 5 days/week for 3 weeks)
Fellowship Award: $5,000 (to cover travel to and from the summer workshop, most meals, and all incidentals).
Application Deadline: September 30, 2016

Application instructions and details can be viewed here.
