Office of Sustainability Transportation Tips

Modified: September 8, 2015

It’s easy to travel smart and sustainably! Whether you bike, opt for car share over car ownership, or take public transit, you can save money and burn calories.

You’ve probably seen the signature blue bikes rolling across Chicago – these are part of the Divvy bike-sharing program. Northwestern students can purchase a Divvy membership at the discounted rate of $55 (normally $75). There are more than 3,000 bikes across 300 stations in Chicago. Divvy stations will be coming to Evanston in spring 2016, making this option convenient for the entire NU community. If you have your own bike, don’t forget to register it with University Police, and keep it healthy with the bike repair stations across the Evanston campus.

Take advantage of being a grad student by using your U-Pass, which is provided by TGS for use on CTA buses and trains. If you do need a car, consider Zipcar or Enterprise CarShare. Both have cars located on or near our campuses and offer discounts to NU students. And if you’ve gone electric with your vehicle, you can power up at our free EV charging stations at the North Campus and Visitor’s Center parking garages.

Getting around town is easy — and eco-friendly — with the resources offered to NU students. Check out the Office of Sustainability’s green traveling tips to learn more.
