Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Excellence in Teaching Award 2015

The Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) offers awards to recognize the importance of excellence in teaching and mentoring as a component of graduate education and the preparation of graduate students for future service as college and university faculty.  One award will be given to a doctoral student and one to a master’s student.  Each award includes a citation and a $750 honorarium that will be presented at the Annual MAGS Meeting.

The MAGS Excellence in Teaching Award Competition is open to all graduate students who have graduate student teaching appointments and are enrolled during the 2014 calendar year.  Each program may nominate one PhD and one Master’s student to be considered by The Graduate School’s internal review committee.

Nominations must be submitted electronically to Kate Veraldi (k-veraldi@northwestern.edu) on or before January 6, 2015 and include the following materials:

  • Letter of support from the nominating department head (DGS or Chair)
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Nominee’s Teaching Portfolio (Please use the following Headings)
    • Statement of Teaching Philosophy
    • Evidence of instructional design and innovation, instructional delivery, course management, and student learning
    • “Teaching in Action” video clip (maximum 10 minutes – see instructions for submission)
    • Student Evaluation of Teaching (Please indicate courses taught as a graduate student at this institution, number of students, instructional responsibility, and a summary of student evaluations)
    • Evidence of Scholarship in Teaching/Learning (Publications/presentations or grant proposals submitted/funded which focused on teaching/learning; evidence of how research informs your teaching)
    • Evidence of Effective Student/Colleague Mentoring
  • List of any past awards or honors for Teaching Excellence
  • Current Institutional Transcript

Excluding nomination form, letters of nomination and support, and vitae, the nomination (Teaching Portfolio) is limited to six (6) pages.  Applications which do not adhere to submission requirements, including deadlines, page limits, and video length, will not be considered.
