Library of Congress call numbers come to Northwestern University Library

Modified: December 12, 2014

Newly acquired books and journals with LC call numbers will be located on the 4th floor of the South tower (4South) and in marked locations in other specific library collections. Because Dewey and LC numbering systems cannot be interfiled, the library has had to create multiples spaces in the stacks for the new materials. For our main collection, additional room in 4South was created by shifting lower use items to the Oak Grove Library Center and consolidating the remaining books. For information about locations of LC books for other collections, visit the LC Call Number FAQ.

Everything, regardless of location, is still searchable online, and browsing by call number is available via the library catalog.  Don’t worry, nothing has been discarded. In fact, the library has been able to continue building its collection ensuring access to the resources you need, whether in print, digital, or other formats.

Beginning in 2015, additional signage will be available to help assist students and faculty locating materials. Book paging and scanning services are also available to all library users. If you have questions regarding the library’s move to Library of Congress classification, feel free to contact your library subject specialist.
