Residency Requirements
Residency is calculated in terms of quarters of full-time study.
The minimum residency requirement for the master of arts and master of science degrees is the equivalent of three quarters of full-time registration in courses authorized by the Graduate Faculty for graduate credit. The minimum residency requirement for the master of fine arts degree is the equivalent of six quarters of full-time registration in courses authorized by the Graduate Faculty for graduate credit. Full-time registration is defined as no fewer than three and no more than four course units per quarter.
Credit earned at an undergraduate institution or at another graduate school or a professional school may, with department approval, be applied toward the department's coursework requirements, but not toward the residency requirements, for a master's degree at Northwestern University. The residency requirements of The Graduate School, as stated above, must be met.
Credit-Bearing Courses
Students working toward the master's degree must fulfill specified quarters of full-time study. Only these courses are counted toward fulfilling the residency requirement. Eligible courses are listed for each graduate program in that program's section of this web site. To find a specific program, see the Academic Programs listing on this web site.
Students who intend to register for courses exclusively during Summer Sessions to complete the requirements for a master's degree should see the Registration section of this web site.
