TGS Hooding Ceremony

The Graduate School's Ninth annual PhD and MFA hooding ceremony will take place on Friday, June 18, 2010 at Noon in Cahn Auditorium.  Additional details about this event will be added as the event nears.

What is a Hooding Ceremony?
The Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Fine Arts Hooding Ceremony is a special recognition ceremony for PhD and MFA degree candidates during which a faculty member places the doctoral hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her success in completing the graduate program. The ceremony is similar to a graduation in that faculty and students are dressed in academic attire. The Hooding Ceremony is in addition to and does not replace the Friday evening Commencement at Ryan Field.

Who Participates in the Hooding Ceremony?
The Graduate School Hooding Ceremony on Friday, June 18, 2010 at Noon will honor graduate students in WCAS, Kellogg, The School of Communication, Feinberg School of Medicine, and TGS Interdisciplinary Programs who are receiving the PhD or MFA degree in the 2009-2010 academic year (December 2009 or June 2010).

How do I Participate in The Graduate School Hooding Ceremony?
In order to participate in the ceremony, students must fill out the Intent to Participate form no later than Friday May 7, 2010.

How do I order regalia?
Information about regalia will be posted at a later date.

Who is invited to attend?
This ceremony is tailored as a special honor for doctorate and master of fine arts recipients, who may invite their friends and family. Students participating in the hooding ceremony may request up to seven tickets. Ticket requests in excess of seven may be accommodated at a later date.

Who performs the hooding?
Each doctoral candidate is asked to invite a faculty member (or two) to perform the hooding.  The hooder(s) must be a current Northwestern University faculty member from the student's department.  It is the student’s responsibility to invite the hooder(s) to the ceremony before filling out the Intent to Participate form.
