Courses Authorized for Graduate Credit
Please see individual program descriptions in the Academic Programs portion of this Web site for courses offered by the various disciplines granting degrees through The Graduate School. Only courses listed on this Web site are authorized by the Graduate Faculty for graduate credit. Undergraduate courses may not be used to fulfill graduate degree requirements.
Course Identification and Numbering
Courses are arranged in levels designated by number. The 300-level courses are primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate students; 400-level courses or seminars are primarily for graduate students, but the major part of the work is not research; 500-level courses are for graduate students only and are primarily research seminars or courses in which special research is done by an individual student under faculty direction.
Each course identifier begins with the program/department code (SUBJECT) followed by three digits indicating the course level and course number. If the course continues for more than one quarter, a hyphen and sequence number(s) follow. For example, in ENGLISH 321-1,2 Old English, ENGLISH identifies the subject, 3 identifies the course level, 21 identifies the course, and 1,2 indicates that the course is taught as a two-quarter sequence. Old English is the course title.
Course Units (Credits)
At Northwestern University , a student's status is determined by the number of units (credits) for which he or she is registered, not the number of courses (some of which earn no units of credit). Students are considered to be full-time if they take courses earning three to four units of credit. Doctoral students who are funded by the University must be registered as full-time students.
Most courses carry one unit of credit; therefore a student must take three to four courses to be considered full-time. However, some registrations (499 Independent Study or Projects, and 590 Research courses, for example) allow the student to register for anywhere from one to four units for the course. By registering for such courses for a total of three to four units, it is possible for a student to take only one or two courses and still be considered full-time.
Numbers in parentheses show the credit value of the course in course units.
- (1) (1) (1) indicates a three-quarter course bearing one unit of credit each quarter; students may earn credit for any quarter or quarters of the course
- (3) indicates a yearlong course bearing one unit of credit each quarter, all three quarters of which must be completed to secure any credit for the course; the same designation denotes a one-quarter course bearing three units of credit
- (1) (1) indicates a two-quarter course bearing one unit of credit each quarter; students may earn credit for either or both quarters of the course
- (2) indicates a two-quarter course bearing one unit of credit each quarter, both quarters of which must be completed to secure any credit for the course; the same designation denotes a one-quarter course bearing two units of credit
- (1) indicates a one-quarter course bearing one unit of credit
- (1, 2, or 3) indicates a graduate offering such as 499 Independent Study or 590 Research, which allows more than one course unit to be earned in a given quarter
- (0) indicates a course that bears no units of credit. Such courses, however, are often necessary to fulfill requirements for a degree in the student's field
