In order to receive the Ph.D. degree, students must meet certain requirements and submit the appropriate materials.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive the doctoral degree, students must complete all coursework (see Ph.D. Residency Requirements), examinations, and a degree-related dissertation. Students must have at least a B average and no X or Y grades. No more than one-third of the total units presented for the doctoral degree may be 499; 590 research is the only course for which the P/N option is acceptable in a PhD degree program.
Final Exam
Scheduling the final examination is the responsibility of the candidate and the members of the committee. The date of the examination must be early enough to allow the student sufficient time to meet the published deadlines for submitting the completed dissertation and all supporting materials to The Graduate School. The final exam must be approved by a faculty committee. A minimum of three individuals must serve on the final exam committee. At least three members of this committee, including the chair, must be members of the Northwestern University Graduate Faculty. Upon formation of the final exam committee, the student should submit the PhD Final Exam form through TGS Forms in CAESAR. With approval of The Graduate School, a faculty member who leaves the University may serve as one of the three full-time Northwestern faculty members following departure from the University.
Filing Requirements and Forms
In addition to completing coursework (see Ph.D. Residency Requirements), gaining admittance to candidacy, successfully defending a prospectus, completing examinations, and a degree-related dissertation, students pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy must file the required documents. Below is the list of forms that need to be filed for the Ph.D. degree prior to graduation . These forms should be submitted via TGS Forms in CAESAR (see the Forms for Current Graduate Students page), with the exception of the Survey of Earned Doctorates, which should be filled out and either e-mailed or mailed to the appropriate Student Services Representative. See the PhD Degree Completion Checklist (PDF) for additional information.
Doctoral candidates seeking an exemption from - or an alternative procedure to - the requirement of a final oral examination should submit a petition to The Graduate School no later than four weeks before the date of expected completion. This petition must be approved by the chair of the final examination committee, acting for the committee, and by the chair of the student's department. Approval by The Graduate School constitutes the basis for the exemption.
Dissertation Submission
Dissertations are submitted electronically to The Graduate School via ProQuest's Web site, at http://dissertations.umi.com/northwestern/. The Graduate School no longer accepts dissertations on paper. Once you have submitted your dissertation, your Student Services Representative will review your formatting and confirm via e-mail that your dissertation is acceptable or if changes need to be made.
