General courses of The Graduate School are designated TGS. For general information on coursework, visit the General Degree Requirements, Coursework webpage.
Doctoral students registering for TGS 598, TGS 599, TGS 503, TGS 513, or TGS 512 should do so through CAESAR. A current student unable to register online may do so by emailing his or her Student Services Representative. Doctoral students may register for courses in addition to TGS 598, 599 and 503 as stated in our Advanced Year and Summer Course Registration policy. Information about deadlines and procedures for registration is available at The Graduate School office, or on our academic calendar.
Students must register for three quarters of TGS 599 by the time the dissertation is submitted and prior to the degree deadline. Students who complete the requirements for the PhD in fewer than three quarters after all residency and course requirements are met need only register for TGS 599 in those quarters between the completion of both residency and candidacy and the submission of the dissertation. In this calculation, Summer Session is considered a regular academic quarter.
Courses Required to Be Taken for a Grade
A student who enters a doctoral program at the first-year level must successfully complete at least nine courses for a grade, preferably in the first year of study. A B average must be maintained in these courses. A student who enters at the second-year level with three quarters of residency credit must successfully complete at least six courses for a grade and maintain a B average. There is also a limitation on independent study registrations described in the General Degree Requirements section in this Web site.
All 590 Research registrations must be taken on a P/N basis rather than for a letter grade. The K grade, not a Y grade, is given when work for 590 remains incomplete at the end of a quarter. The one-year deadline for making up an incomplete does not apply to the K grade. All K grades must be changed by the time the dissertation is submitted to The Graduate School.
Noncredit Courses Conferring Full-Time Registration Status
Four noncredit courses offered through The Graduate School confer full-time registration status for doctoral students at various stages in their careers. Additional information about these courses may be found in the Research and Continuation Courses section of this website. These courses include:
Before Admission to Candidacy: TGS 598 Resident Doctoral Study
After completing at least three quarters of full-time study toward the PhD degree, a student may register for TGS 598 Resident Doctoral Study. This registration carries no credit toward residency but allows a student to maintain full-time status and to use University facilities.
After Admission to Candidacy: TGS 599 Post-Candidacy Research
After satisfying the residency requirements and completing coursework in accordance with current regulations of the Graduate Faculty and the department or program, and after being admitted to candidacy, the student must complete three quarters of TGS 599 Postcandidacy Research registration. The three quarters of TGS 599 need not be consecutive, but this registration requirement must be fulfilled, whether or not the student is in residence, by the time the dissertation is submitted and prior to the degree deadline. The only exception to this requirement is that students who complete the requirements for the PhD in fewer than three quarters after all residency and course requirements are met need only register for TGS 599 in those quarters between the completion of residency and the submission of the dissertation. In this calculation, Summer Session is considered a regular academic quarter.
After Completing TGS 599 Post-Candidacy Research (Funded): TGS 503 Resident Research Continuation
A student who has completed three quarters of TGS 599 and needs to maintain full-time status should register for TGS 503 Resident Research Continuation if they are receiving funding. Full-time registration is required for use of University facilities, access to the Student Health Service, and insurance coverage. TGS 503 is an appropriate registration for teaching assistants, research assistants, fellows, those students who wish to borrow or defer federal student loans, and international students on J-1 or F-1 visas.
After Completing TGS 599 Post-Candidacy Research (Unfunded): TGS 512 Continuous Registration
A student who has completed three quarters of TGS 599 and needs to maintain full-time status but who is no longer receiving funding should register for TGS 512 Continuous Registration.
After Nine Years from initial date of registration: Beginning Fall 2008, doctoral students, after nine years from first term of enrollment, are required to maintain their affiliation with Northwestern by registering for TGS 513, Advanced Continuous Registration. Tuition for TGS 513 is currently $1000 per quarter.
