Guidelines for Students
SROP participants must be prepared to make a full-time commitment to their research and maintain a professional attitude toward their faculty mentors, their colleagues, and the SROP administrators.
SROP participants are expected to:
1. Contact their faculty mentor before June 14 to discuss the research project and ask for reading materials
2. Work on their research for at least 30-40 hours per week
3. Meet with their faculty mentor on a weekly basis
4. Attend all activities and events published in the 2009 SROP Calendar (excluding social events)
5. Complete and submit all assignments, evaluations, and other documents on time.
6. Refrain from taking summer school classes or working a job between June 21 and August 13, 2010.
The $4,000 stipend will be paid in multiple installments, and stipend checks may be held by The Graduate School if a participant fails to comply with the aforementioned expectations. The research supply funds ($500) will be transferred into your faculty mentor’s departmental account prior to the first week of the program.
Access to the Northwestern University Health Services Center is provided for SROP participants, and this service is to be used for minor health issues. However, each SROP participant must have their own health insurance, which should be used in the event of a medical emergency.
Guidelines for Faculty Mentors
Faculty mentors are expected to play a significant role in shaping a research experience that will encourage SROP participants to consider graduate study. Specifically, faculty mentors are expected to:
- Help design and monitor a full-time research project for the student
- Work with the student on an abstract, outline, rough draft, and final paper based on the research
- Work with the student on an oral presentation of the research in preparation for the Research Forum that will take place at the end of the program
- Permit time in the student's research schedule for meetings required of all SROP participants and for the SROP conference
- Provide a detailed evaluation of the student's performance at the mid-point and end of the program
All faculty mentors are welcome to attend the SROP Orientation on June 21st, the SROP Conference, and any scheduled meetings on the 2010 SROP calendar. Faculty mentors are expected to attend the Research Forum on August 12th, at which all Northwestern SROP participants will present the results of their research. The Forum is followed by a luncheon for participants, faculty mentors, and invited guests.
It is important to ensure that any student who is participating in a faculty mentor's ongoing research has a meaningful role in the project. Ongoing advice and guidance will be necessary for students engaging in more independent research projects. Students who meet wih their faculty mentors several times per week usually have a more productive and rewarding experience. Before the first week of the program, $500 will be transferred into a departmental or research account designated by each faculty mentor for research supply costs.
