Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

The Program - Experience at a Top Research Institution
The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) provides sophomores and juniors majoring in the social sciences, humanities, communications, biological sciences, physical sciences, and engineering an opportunity for direct involvement in research. Throughout its 22-year history, SROP has endeavored to increase diversity among students pursuing graduate education and provide a valuable academic experience for many students who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities. The program is eight weeks in length, from June 23 through August 14, 2008, and includes faculty supervised research, enrichment activities that prepare undergraduates for graduate school (i.e. graduate school application workshop, writing workshops, etc.), and a conference. Sophomores and juniors who are from groups which have been traditionally underrepresented in graduate schools (e.g., certain racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, etc.) are encouraged to apply for SROP.
Each student selected to participate in the program will work with a faculty member in the student's area of interest. The faculty member will: 1) help design and monitor an appropriate full-time research project for the student or incorporate the student into on-going research; 2) work with the student on an outline, rough draft, and final paper which summarize the research; and 3) supervise the student's presentation of the research at the forum/dinner which concludes the program.
A conference for SROP participants and supervising faculty members from all the CIC institutions (the "Big Ten" universities plus The University of Chicago) will be held in July on the campus of one of the Big Ten schools. This conference, provided at no cost to SROP participants, offers an opportunity for students and faculty from Northwestern to meet students and faculty from other universities and to exchange information and insights.
It is expected that SROP participants are prepared to make a full-time commitment to their research, work energetically on their projects, and develop a professional attitude toward their research, their faculty supervisors, and their colleagues. During the eight-week period of the SROP, each participant is expected to work at least 30-40 hours per week on the project.
A writing consultant will be available to work with students to improve their research writing skills.
* If you are interested in the fields of Speech or Communications, there is a special summer project that may be of interest to you involving hiphop-based experiential learning and the global communications network. Please click on the link below for more information about this project, and if you are interested in working on this project, please make mention of that in your statement of research interest.

Additionally, The Graduate School will provide University housing and a campus meal subsidy of $450. If you are interested in the housing provided by The Graduate School, please notify Mario Craigen. SROP participants who do not request campus housing are responsible for their housing expenses during the summer.
Students may not register for any summer school or other classes (i.e. MCAT prep, GRE prep, etc), accept a job for additional pay, or conduct research off-campus without prior written approval from the SROP Coordinator, Mario Craigen.

Northwestern is a member of The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), a consortium of 12 institutions of higher learning dedicated to increasing diversity in doctoral programs and on college and university faculties. The CIC member institutions collaborate in a number ways to increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in higher education, and the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is one of the means by which this goal is achieved.
