The Communications, Humanities, Economics, Social & Behavioral Sciences Diversity Committee is composed of faculty members, graduate students and administrators. The Committee was established in October 2006, and the primary focus of the committee is on bolstering diversity recruitment and retention efforts for Northwestern's graduate programs in the following areas: the social and behavioral sciences, economics, humanities and communications. The committee will work to develop an aggressive plan of action that will help to diversify the graduate student body across disciplines.
Under the direction of Douglas Medin (Psychology), the Committee’s chairperson, five subcommittees have been organized to carry out the Committee’s mission. The subcommittees are:
Internal Coordination –
Charged with the task of linking various Northwestern diversity efforts
Recruitment -
Charged with devising a strategy to increase the number of URM students in SBEHC programs.
Research & Innovation –
Charged with researching the diversity efforts of peer institutions and devising new strategies for diversity recruitment and retention.
Retention –
Charged with increasing retention of URM students enrolled in SBEHC programs.
Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) –
Charged with the responsibility of evaluating SROP and offering suggestions for improvement.
