AGEP PROFESSORS DESCRIPTION
AGEP Professors are life sciences and engineering faculty at
Northwestern University committed to graduate education and the career development at all academic levels of underrepresented minorities. AGEP Professors in conjunction with AGEP scholars, their departments, institutes and/or centers coordinate efforts with the graduate school to increase the recruitment, retention and  graduation of underrepresented minorities as well as to increase their placement in academic positions. AGEP Professors are selected based on their commitment to graduating doctoral students and efforts devoted to increasing underrepresented minority representation in the sciences, engineering and mathematics.
 

A.      Commitment

Required

  • To graduating or mentoring to graduation at least one underrepresented minority PhD graduate student over the next 10 years

Expected involvement in at least two of the following activities

  • Attending one underrepresented minority conference annually and attending the annual AGEP conference at least twice during the five year grant period or when underrepresented minority doctoral students in their area are presenting research, and/or annual conferences organized by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL)
  • Mentoring underrepresented minority undergraduates in summer programs, such as SROP (Summer Research Opportunity Program), MRI (Materials Research Internships), CURE (Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience), DDP (Drug Discovery Program), NUIN (Northwestern University Institute for Neuroscience) or related programs
  • Joining a team that annually visits underrepresented minority-serving schools and majority schools targeting underrepresented minority students
  • Mentoring underrepresented minority PhD graduate students and overseeing the work of AGEP Scholars
  • Organizing and supervising enrichment programs/courses to prepare entering PhD graduate students
  • Joining Northwestern committees aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented minority PhD graduate students entering careers in STEM fields

B.         Reporting Requirements

  •  Annual Report listing underrepresented minority activities and how AGEP funds were used. This report will be included in the annual report to be submitted to the National Science Foundation.

C.         Nomination

  • Cover letter.  The letter should include a statement of commitment describing how the applicant will contribute to the AGEP mission in areas of recruitment, retention, and mentoring of underrepresented minority master's and  PhD graduate students and minority undergraduate and/or high school students.  In addition, the applicant should indicate the minority activities in which he/she would likely be involved during the tenure of the AGEP professorship to meet the goals of the program.
  • Narrative to include:
      • Name, title, affiliation
      • Title and description of research projects
      • Summary of past and present minority activities
      •  List of 5 publications (authors, title, complete journal reference), including publications with underrepresented minority authors
  • Curriculum Vitae.   Submit a standard curriculum vitae including those activities that involved underrepresented minority students and activities.
  • Personal Information (Name, title, affiliation, telephone and fax number, e-mail address)

 D.    Submission

 

  • AGEP professors can be self-nominated or be nominated by chairs or other professors.

E.     Selection Process

  • The applications for AGEP professors will be ranked based on their statement of commitment to participate in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority PhD graduate students; on the needs (retention, placement) of current PhD graduate students; on past, present and future commitment to participate in underrepresented minority activities; and on summer student mentoring.

  • The selection process for AGEP professors is ongoing. 

  • Awards of up to $3,000 annually will be given to each AGEP professor to cover expenses related specifically to retention purposes, to pay for one trip to a minority conference for either a student or the professor, or other needs directly related to the goals of the grant.
