ALLIANCE for GRADUATE EDUCATION and the PROFESSORIATE  (AGEP)
 


 

AGEP Scholars Description

AGEP Scholars are advanced graduate students in life sciences or engineering (post PhD candidacy) at Northwestern University committed to graduate education and the career development of underrepresented minorities.   AGEP Scholars are expected to  serve as mentors to younger students at the academic and community level.  AGEP Scholars will work with AGEP Professors to increase the recruitment, retention and PhD completion of underrepresented minorities as well as to increase their placement in academic positions.

 

A.       Commitment

Required
 

  • To attending one Office of Fellowships grant writing workshop and applying to one external funding source
     

Expected involvement in at least two of the following activities
 

  • Participating in mentoring underrepresented minority students
  • Leading underrepresented minority student organizations
  • Helping younger underrepresented minority students in need of academic mentoring by organizing in collaboration with AGEP professors:
      • Study groups
      • Pre-course preparation groups
      • Tutoring sections
  • Participating in special training workshops at the annual AGEP Conference
  • Attending underrepresented minority conferences and actively participating in Northwestern graduate school recruitment activities--AGEP Scholars are expected to present their research at these conferences
  • Joining with teams who annually visit minority-serving schools
  • Participating in the Science and Engineering Committee on Multicultural Affairs (SECMA) or the McCormick Committee on Minority Affairs 
  • Inviting and hosting minority speakers to give seminars at programs and/or department seminar series

 

 

B.    Nomination

  • Cover letter.  The cover letter should affirm a commitment to mentoring younger students and should describe the type of activities in which the applicant is willing to be involved as an AGEP Scholar.
  • Letter from research advisor authorizing the student to participate in the program.
  • Narrative containing:
      • Name, title, affiliation
      • Brief description of the applicant's career path and goals
      • Title and description of current research
      • List of up to 5 publications (authors, title, complete journal reference) 
  • Curriculum Vitae   (standard curriculum vitae for the student's discipline)
      • Personal information  (Name, title, affiliation, telephone and fax number, e-mail address)
      • Education
      • Current research interests
      • Undergraduate and graduate research experience (indicate program, type of research, affiliation, and name of research adviser)  
      • Research positions/employment
      • Teaching experience
      • Awards and honors
      • Mentoring experience
      • Publications in peer review journals
      • Conference presentations (Symposia, Workshops, Platform and Poster Presentations)
      • Grant funding (NRSA, Training Grants, Grant Supplements)
      • Other pertinent information

 C.    Submission
 

  • AGEP Scholars can be self-nominated or can be nominated by chairs or professors.
  • Submit complete electronic nomination to Dean Larry Henschen at the following e-mail address:   AGEP@northwestern.edu

D.    Selection Process

  • Nominations for AGEP Scholars will be ranked based on their statement of commitment to participate in the recruitment, retention and mentoring of underrepresented minority PhD graduate students; on past, present and future commitment to participate in minority activities; and on summer student mentoring.  AGEP Scholar selection is ongoing throughout the academic year. 
  • AGEP Scholars should have written permission of their advisor to participate and can only do so after being admitted to candidacy.
