In today's diverse society, an excellent university is one that maintains an open and plural community where learning is valued and people of differing perspectives come together. My hope and expectation to make Northwestern one of the world's greatest universities can only be fulfilled if together we commit to making this a hospitable place for women and men of different origins, religions, classes, and races. I call upon all members of the University community to rededicate themselves to the task of creating an educational environment congenial to all of our students and faculty, one that will allow us to make important contributions to the greater society at large.
Henry S. Bienen
President, Northwestern University
The Graduate School's Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs promotes diversity in Northwestern's student population by helping to recruit a diverse body of applicants and by providing support services to those students when they enroll. The office provides a welcoming environment for students invited for a campus visit and helps match new students with current advanced student volunteers who serve as peer advisors and guides to the university. Multicultural Affairs advisors are available to provide guidance to students and listen to their concerns, maintaining close personal contact with students throughout their careers at Northwestern. Alumni, available via the Web site, also serve as resources for current and prospective students.
Activities sponsored by or coordinated through this office include quarterly receptions to create opportunities for students, faculty and administrators to network across disciplines; an annual conference that serves as a venue for student research presentations; and mentoring for a variety of graduate student organizations such as the Graduate Leadership Council, the Black Graduate Student Association and the Graduate Student Association for Latino and Spanish Activities. The office also works with academic programs to design and promote discipline-specific recruitment efforts, and it also provides placement support and services for students seeking employment.
