Counterculture Study Group, Convened by Center for Civic Engagement

Modified: October 27, 2017

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are invited to join a new Counterculture Study Group at Northwestern, convened by faculty and graduate students from several departments and schools and supported by the Center for Civic Engagement and the University Library. At their first meeting, they will gauge which substantive issues are of interest to the participants and how they can organize ourselves to support the work the group wants to do. They hope to build a research community that will strengthen each member individually while also building a community of scholars.

The catalyst for this effort was an academic conference held this summer in San Francisco (complete program found here) that was organized by a group of scholars from the Bay Area and Northwestern. Over 150 scholars from around the world attended (see the Chronicle publication here).

The group’s goal is to support graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty in advancing groundbreaking work that reconsiders the countercultural movement and its legacies through nuanced, unanticipated, or innovative perspectives. The group would be a hub of scholarship here and would be in dialogue with the California campus and west coast scholars. Please fill out this short form to express your interest and join here. The group conveners will be in touch in a few weeks to schedule the first meeting.
