Conference Explores Community-Building In STEM Fields

Chicago, Ill. – The Cultivating Ensembles in STEM Education and Research Conference (CESTEMER) will meet at Goodman Theatre from September 15th through 17th, 2017. Participants will present on and discuss many aspects of performance, arts, and community as they relate to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This is the third CESTEMER meeting, following conferences in 2012 and 2015. Raquell Holmes, Jenifer Alonzo and Sarah Hug co-created the 2012 meeting with support from the National Science Foundation in the form of a Resource Coordination Network Incubator Award and through the NSF’s CreativeIT award under Pamela Jennings.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Cultivating Extraordinary Science Communities: Re-imagining Arts, Humanities, and STEM.” Presentation sessions are on themes such as inclusion, outreach, and multidisciplinary research. Professional development and group dynamics workshops have also been organized. Participants will also discuss performance & STEM in an unconference and an all-inclusive share faire.

The organizers of the conference include representatives from improvscience, AAAS Fellowship Programs, UC Davis, and the Goodman Theatre.

This is the first time that the Goodman Theatre will host the conference. Willa Taylor is the Goodman’s Director of Education. An advocate of science and theater, Taylor sees CESTEMER as an opportunity to bring these communities together in Chicago.
