Northwestern recipients of Burroughs Wellcome Fund Awards

Congratulations to two Northwestern postdoctoral fellows, Monica Laronda, PhD and Laura Dassama, PhD, who received awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund! Check out the complete award announcement on the BWF webpage!

Description of Awards:

Dr. Monica M. Laronda is one of twelve investigators that received Career Awards at the Scientific Interface from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.  There were 245 eligible pre-proposal applications received for the twelfth cycle of this award program. Dr. Laronda will receive a grant of $500,000 over five years to fund her project, which focuses on “Engineering an artificial ovary to restore fertility and endocrine function in cancer survivors”. This award recognizes the vital role that cross-trained scientists will play in furthering biomedical science and is intended to foster the early career development of researchers.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Laronda!

Dr. Laura M. K. Dassama is one of twelve postdoctoral researchers across the nation to receive the Postdoctoral Enrichment Program (PDEP) award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.  This award provides a total of $60,000 over three years to support the career development activities for underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows in a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada whose training and professional development are guided by mentors committed to helping them advance to stellar careers in biomedical or medical research. Dr. Dassama’s research focuses on the functional and structural characterization of a methanobactin transporter.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Dassama!
